EV or strong hybrid: which one actually saves you money in India?

The sticker price is the worst way to compare an electric SUV with a strong hybrid. Once you add electricity at home rates, road tax waivers and the far shorter service list on an EV, the maths shifts sharply within three years.
Our model assumes 15,000 km a year, 80% home charging and dealer-scheduled servicing. On that basis an electric compact SUV runs at roughly ₹1.4 per km against ₹3.9 per km for a strong hybrid and ₹6.6 per km for a petrol automatic.
Where hybrids win is flexibility. If you drive out of the city more than twice a month, or park on a street with no charging point, the hybrid removes an entire category of planning from your life — and that is worth real money.
Our recommendation: if you have a dedicated parking spot with a plug point and drive mostly inside the city, the EV is now the cheaper car to own over five years. Everyone else should look at a strong hybrid first.
